Information

Mount Apayang was also known as "Matandang Gubat" by locals due to its dense forest cover. It's often climbed in conjunction with Mount Talamitam as the trails are relatively close and accessible. Mt Apayang offers a more forested trail providing a different hiking experience. The trails can be described as relatively easy to moderate making them suitable for beginners but some sections may be steep. The summit of Mt Apayang may offer views of surrounding mountains and the coastline weather permitting.

Trivia

Mount Apayang isn't as widely known as some of the country's other peaks but it holds its own unique charm and a few interesting facts. While precise historical records might be scarce local legends often weave tales of its origins possibly linking it to ancient settlements or significant events in the region's history.

Starting / Entry Point

The path to the right leads to El Talamitam Campsite, while the left path takes hikers to the entry and exit points of Mount Apayang. This route descends before reaching large boulders, with the ground covered in fallen leaves and dirt. The tall, dense trees create a secluded atmosphere. This section also serves as a short rest stop, offering a chance to take a break before continuing the journey.

Uphill Path

Along the journey is passing through the uphill path. It's not very difficult to walk on, even though it's going down. Every edge or corner has trees that serve as handholds when going down. It can be difficult for travelers to go down, especially if they haven't eaten any sweet food. Because based on the experiences of travelers, it will cause their knees to tremble if they don't eat or drink sweet things.

Rock Path

The last picture shows rocks of different sizes and shapes. It could serve as a station that acts as a landmark, indicating that the summit of Apayang is near. The rocks are arranged in a row, providing seats for travelers. The climate is quite cold, even under the sun. It's very pleasant to rest here, especially after a long journey. The ground is flat and not elevated. Various types of trees can be found here, including bamboo."

The History on Peak

Hikers will find inscriptions into the rocks, some dating back to the Japanese occupation of the Philippines. These inscriptions often with date August 26. 1958 serve as reminders of the mountain's past as a hideout for Filipinos during World War II. While the exact type of rock is not specified, they are likely a common type found in the area perhaps igneous or sedimentary rocks. The summit of Mount Apayang is less grassy and more forested than nearby Mount Talamitam so the rocks may be more exposed and visible.
